How to Add Tables to WordPress Posts and Pages

This article targets table production for everyone. No HTML or CSS needed, and so, coding is not a prerequisite. Therefore, if you want to create tables inside any of your posts to allow data to be more readable or more easily modified, this is a good way to do it without getting into the specifics of HTML or CSS coding. The process is relatively simple and it can be done by anyone that has minimal knowledge of how to use WordPress.

Using the TablePress plugin

The first step to take is to download and install TablePress, a plugin that is used to create tables. After installation, the plugin needs to be activated and then the menu of the plugin can be used from inside your WordPress admin.

Creating a table is easy and relatively simple afterwards.

You will want to click on the New Table button and then on the Add New table. The next step is to pick the number of rows and columns you’d like your table to contain. If you’ve used a MS Word application to create a simple table, the process is similar. Also, adding new rows or adding or removing columns can be done afterwards as well.

After you’ve established the number of rows and columns you’d like your table to contain, you can go ahead and click on the Add Table button to actually create the table.

The next step involves using the Edit Table screen to add the table to your post.

Open the post you’re looking to add a table to and then look up at the visual editor bar.  A new icon should be present there, with the table option. You have to press the Insert Shortcode next to the table you want to insert if you have more than one saved. Basically, you’re choosing which table to add to the post as you would when you’d pick an image to add to a post.

Also, you can skip the visual editor step and simply just insert your shortcode for the table into the post. To do that you want to click the TablePress menu and hover with your mouse over the table you are looking to add to your post. Copy the code and then paste it in the post where you want it to appear.

The plugin can work with cvs files, with json files, so HTML and Json tables can be used, either as imports or as exports. Editing the tables to customize the look will require some HTML or CSS, so you’re going to be stuck with simple tables if you don’t want to get into more drastic visual modifications, or you can create the tables externally and then import them.
